The rate at which women die
in maternal related cases are becoming alarming, it seems the trend is
increasing instead of declining.
The government over the
years has so neglected the health sector that it has become a mirage!
Fortunately for them, they
always fly abroad to get Panadol or do I say #westernadol# (western type of Panadol)
for every headache for both themselves and family members. A good example and
fresh in memory is a former governor who claimed he built a world class
hospital in his state only to be flown abroad in a private jet for medical care
when he was involved in a car accident (haba!!!).
Dear compatriots, statistics
keep informing us that maternal death in Nigeria continue to increase, can
someone tell me how many of our leaders that their wives/daughters/sisters or
even concubines etc. had died during childbirth???? Even if it happened, it is
very minimal because most of them take them abroad to deliver (that is if they don’t
reside there permanently) these are people being paid with tax payers’ money!
Our health care providers
are not also helping matter because:
1.
The quality of affordable healthcare services
and care givers are declining by the day
2. A
lot of time is being wasted at the hospitals by patients before being attended
to, imagine a woman in labour and there is no doctor on ground, she either wait
or deliver with the nurses assistance – what happens when there is complications?
– DEATH!!!
3.
Some of the caregivers (Doctors, Nurses, Lab
Scientist etc.) undertake their task as though they are ‘granting a favour’ to
the patient. Have you visited any public hospital recently? The following is the
scenario you are likely to witness – you are given a 7am appointment, you get
there to wait till 9am when the workers will arrive, you wait for them to
greet/gist their colleagues, makeup and eat breakfast before attending to you
(any attempt to complain will complicate your issue as you may end up being the
last person to be attended to; that is if your file was not hid and you are
told to come another day)
It is
the above experience to takes the women to private hospital and unfortunately most
of them does not have qualified gynecologist or surgeon and they resort to ‘making
due with what you have” which is allowing a general medical practitioner to undertake
what he has only a basic knowledge thereby practicing “trial and error” with
the woman’s life!
When
anything goes wrong, they will call a gynecologist to come for rescue mission/corrective
measure and the later may either be busy or held in a traffic, he/she will keep
saying “I am coming/I will soon be there/I am almost there” until the woman is
tired and give up the ghost!!
Now you
wonder, why the hospital did not contact him to be part of the
procedure/process from the beginning, they are trying to cut cost!!!
4.
Unnecessary bureaucratic procedures at the
hospital – have you ever rushed a pregnant women to the hospital and they ask
you to keep her and go pay for card, pay for scan etc. (couldn’t some care been
given to her to save her life while all that processes are going on? Most annoying
is the fact that when all that is completed, you have to wait for the doctor!
What
happens after making all the required payment and she dies because she had lost
a lot of blood/very week, does the hospital refund all the money paid? NO! in fact, you have to pay for mortuary
(man’s inhumanity to man)
Do I
also talk about the role of some employers in this ugly incident? Your guess is
as good as mine!!
The above are some of the
reasons that pregnant become scared/afraid during the period of their pregnancy
which is not also good to their health.
Finally, we all have a wife,
daughter, sister, aunt, niece, fiancée and friend whom we love dearly and would
not want to be a victim of maternal death.

revolution, #saynotomaternaldeathinnigeria#
